Wet Nursing: Is It For You?

Tuesday's Tastes Button

April from Mama on a Green Mission and Courtney from Joy of Momma Joyner host this breastfeeding meme every Tuesday and the topic is always different. I joined this meme a couple of times. Once the topic was on extended breastfeeding, and last week it was on my breastfeeding journey. I’d love to keep at it and post every week.

This weeks topic is wet nursing.

Well, lets see here… I never actually have given this topic any thought other than what I have read about the old biblical times.

I do not think I could let another woman nurse my baby. I just don’t think emotionally I could do it. It is so intimate. I think it would hurt me. I know that sounds silly, but I just could not do it. I could use donated breast milk though, but that is a whole other topic.

As for breastfeeding a child who was not mine, I could do that. I think it would have to be a family that I was close to. I am not so sure I could breastfeed a child who I was not close to. But then again, I’ve never been presented with this idea either, so maybe I could do this for any child/mother.

Not sure.

I wish I could answer that question.

What about you?

Could you let another woman breastfeed your child?

Would you breastfeed another child who is not your own?

  1. Hmmm...I guess I could let a family member or close friend nurse my baby if I couldn't myself. I definitely could nurse another baby, but I would still be afraid that I would get too attached.

  2. Thanks for linking up!!! :) Yea, I'd have a problem letting someone else nurse my baby if I were around. That would be hard because of that bond and closeness that we have with babies when nursing. Mandi (above) makes a good point...I am sure I would form a bond with another person's baby if I were to nurse them. They would have to be my "milk" child! :)

  4. I feel the same as you about this topic. While I believe that wet nursing is awesome for some, I just don't think it would be right for me (on either side of it).

  5. I think ultimately it would depend on the situation. If my child is in danger of dying or something and that was their only way of surviving of course I would. Otherwise I don't think so. I think I could breastfeed another child that wasn't mine if the situation happened. I saw on the news or something where a woman was in another country (she was like 9 months pregnant) and they found a baby on the side of the road. And the baby was so dehydrated and stuff that she nursed her. I think that is amazing
